Program Philosophy

The primary purpose of the Charleston Family YMCA is to promote the spiritual, mental, and physical well-being of all persons.  The YMCA’s involvement in sports has been one means of teaching Christian ideas, values, and behavior based on this purpose.  Sports in the YMCA have never been an end in itself, but rather a vehicle for achieving a much more global purpose, promoting character development through the four values: caring, honesty, responsibility, and respect.  The Barracuda Swim Team is a recreational swim program for youth 6 to 18 years of age. The emphasis of the program is placed on learning competitive skills, enjoyment of the sport, and lifelong participation in swimming

Coaches’ Philosophy

The purpose of the Charleston Family YMCA Barracuda Swim Team program is to provide each and every swimmer with the opportunity to strive for excellence in competitive swimming. While each swimmer may begin his or her path at a different point along this road, we encourage swimmers at all levels to accept the challenges inherent in this wonderful sport. With goal-setting, motivation, confidence, handling pressure, taking responsibility, improving or maintaining health & fitness, enjoying friendships & having FUN all being by-products of our quest -- how can it get any better?!
